Painting Guide

How to compare painting estimates

Compare the rooms, surfaces, prep and finish work behind each total. Use this checklist to ask clearer questions before choosing a painter.

Start with the same rooms and surfaces

Two painting estimates may describe different jobs, even when they cover the same home. One might cover walls alone. Another might include ceilings, trim and doors. Compare the work behind the total before deciding which estimate suits your plans.

Give each painter the same room list. Name the surfaces in each room, including closets or built-ins you want discussed. Mark anything that should keep its current finish. For exterior work, list the siding, trim and doors separately.

Read the prep and repair details

Look for a clear description of how the surfaces will be prepared. Ask which areas need cleaning, filling, sanding or primer. A broad phrase such as surface prep may leave important details open. Ask the painter to explain what it means for your home.

Point out cracks, nail holes, stains and peeling paint during the estimate visit. Ask which repairs are included and which need separate work. If a problem needs more than paint prep, ask how it will be handled before painting begins.

Confirm the paint, finish and coat plan

Ask whether the estimate includes paint and other materials. It should be clear which paint and finish are planned for each surface. If choices are still open, ask what the total assumes and how a later choice could change it.

Check the planned number of coats and where primer is included. Ask how the current color and your new color affect that plan. A quote for one coat is a different scope from one for two. Compare the stated work rather than guessing from the total.

Check protection, cleanup and exclusions

Ask what will be covered and protected during the job. Confirm who will move furniture and belongings, and what you need to clear before work starts. These details help you compare both the painting and the steps expected from you.

Read any exclusions, meaning work the estimate leaves out. Ask about daily tidying, final cleanup and leftover paint. Clarify how finished work will be reviewed and how you can raise a concern. Put any agreed details into the written scope.

Ask about changes, timing and payment

Ask how extra work or a change in your plans would be priced and approved. Find out who to contact with questions during the project. Discuss the proposed timing, along with any dates that matter to your household.

Ask when payments are due and what each payment covers. Read the written payment terms before agreeing to the work. If a detail is unclear, request an explanation so you can compare the estimates with the same information.

Use this estimate comparison checklist

Keep this list beside each estimate. If an item is missing, ask for the detail before making your choice.

  • Are the same rooms and surfaces listed?
  • Are prep steps and included repairs clear?
  • Are paint, materials, finishes and coats named?
  • Is the furniture and floor protection plan clear?
  • Are excluded work and homeowner tasks listed?
  • Are cleanup and the final review explained?
  • Are timing, changes and payment terms clear?

“Scott and his assistant did a fantastic job at our house! We had a list of small, but tedious, paint and drywall projects that needed to be complete before selling our house. He gave us a very reasonable quote, showed up on time, and did a fantastic job! We had a drywall project that we were worried would never look perfect no matter who did it... well, it looks perfect! He was even patient through our wishy washy communication skills and didn't get aggravated like others might have. Would highly recommend Still Perfection!!”

Stacey Collins, via Google

“Still Perfection is now our official go-to for any future painting needs!! Scott and his team do amazing work!! Our fence, which was once left unfinished and a thin, dull white by our previous painter, is now bright and vivid! They even got into the cracks that we didn't think it was possible to reach! We highly recommend Still Perfection Painting!!”
